Letter From the Pastor
Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice!
The 3rd Sunday of Advent: Joy Sunday
Gaudete Sunday celebrates the unshakable joy of Christ's coming and the fulfillment of God's promises.
The third Sunday of Advent is a time to reflect on the joy that comes from Christ’s promise of restoration and the fulfillment of God’s promises. This special day, known as Gaudete Sunday, derives its name from the Latin word “Gaudete,” meaning “rejoice.” It marks a shift in the Advent season, a rising action that brings us closer to the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
On Gaudete Sunday, we are reminded of the angelic proclamation to the shepherds in the fields. When the angels appeared to announce Christ’s birth, they declared, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10, NIV). This message encapsulates the essence of Joy Sunday—a celebration of the joy that Christ’s coming brings to the world.
In Philippians 4:4, the Apostle Paul exhorts believers, saying, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” This verse speaks to the unshakable joy that comes from being united with Christ. Paul writes these words while imprisoned, highlighting that true joy is not dependent on circumstances but is rooted in the presence and promises of God. This joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and a mark of the new life in Christ. As we meditate on Philippians 4:4 during Advent, we are reminded to find our joy in the Lord, even amidst trials, as we anticipate the restoration and renewal Christ brings.
Advent is a season of preparation, both for celebrating Jesus’ first coming and for anticipating His return. By the third Sunday of Advent, we are midway through this journey, and the joy of Christ’s coming becomes more palpable. This joy is not merely an emotion but a deep assurance that God is faithful and has fulfilled His promises to rescue humanity from the slavery of sin, brokenness, and death. Moreover, it is a reminder of the new world inaugurated by Christ, one that exists even now within the old, corrupt, and decaying world. As followers of Jesus, we are already part of this new creation.
The candle lit on the third Sunday of Advent is often rose-colored, symbolizing joy and the shift from penitence to celebration. It serves as a visual reminder of the hope and gladness that Christ’s coming brings. As we light this candle, we rejoice in the truth that God’s promises are not only trustworthy but have been fulfilled through Jesus.
This Advent season, may your heart overflow with joy as you prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior and eagerly await His return. Let the joy of Christ’s presence and His promises be your strength and hope.
May joy brim over in your life,
Pastor Anny+
