Stepping Away to Draw Closer: Lent and the Wilderness of the Soul

Summary: Lent invites us to step away from life’s distractions, just as Jesus did in the wilderness, so we can hear God’s voice, deepen our faith, and rely fully on Him.

As we journey through Lent, we are invited to follow Jesus into the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). In this sacred season, we step away from distractions and open our hearts to God’s presence.

In the wilderness, Jesus was tempted by Satan—offered comfort, power, and recognition. Yet He resisted, choosing instead to rely on God. His time of fasting and prayer was not about deprivation but about deepening His dependence on the Father. Lent offers us the same opportunity.

Our world is filled with noise—endless to-do lists, social media, and the pressures of daily life. These distractions can keep us from hearing God’s voice. But when we intentionally set aside time for prayer, fasting, and reflection, we create space for God to work in us.

What might God be calling you to let go of this Lent? Is it the constant pull of technology? The rush of busyness? The desire for control? As we strip away distractions, we discover what truly sustains us: not bread alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

This week, I encourage you to find your own “wilderness moment.” Turn off the noise, step away from the urgent, and be still in God’s presence. There, in the quiet, He will strengthen you for the journey ahead.
