MINISTER OF MUSIC

Job Opening

St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church seeks a creative, talented, flexible, collaborative, enthusiastic Minister of Music. St. Augustine has a deep appreciation for music in the liturgy. We currently have two services, a mixed service with both traditional and contemporary music and a choir, and a bi-monthly Sunday evening Youth Service with a worship band. Our ideal Minister of Music will be responsible for both services, including choir direction and worship band direction. We are open to trying new music to enrich our worship. It is possible this position could be expanded to include starting a community music development program for children, youth, and seniors.  St. Augustine is a warm, welcoming, affirming, God’s loving, Jesus following church in the Episcopal tradition. General Responsibilities:

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn liturgy and musical tradition in the Episcopal Church.
  • Choose hymns, songs, and music with the Rector’s approval for each service.
  • Collaborate with the Rector to plan worship and special services.
  • Attend monthly Worship Committee meetings.
  • Plan and play special services such as Christmas Eve, Blue Christmas, Easter service, and Holy Week services, and Animal Memorial Service.
  • Coordinate solo and small group vocal performances.
  • Arrange tuning, maintenance, and calibration for instruments
  • Play at funerals and weddings as available. (These include honoraria from families.)
  • Educate congregation about liturgical music and music history.
  • Direct and Rehearse choir.
  • Direct and rehearse worship band.
  • Recruit and orient new choir members.
  • Arrange for supply musician when absent.


Knowledge/Skills/Special Requirements

  • Must be able to read music.
  • Must be skilled in piano and keyboard playing with both manual and electronic instruments.

Employment Perimeters

  • 50 hours/ month
  • $40/ hour
  • Extra hours for special services
  • 4 paid Sundays of vacation a year
  • Reports to the Rector
  • No other paid benefits
