Altar Guild
Director: Joan Cavanagh

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

                                                                                           2 Corinthians 9:12

Why does St. Augustine Church need this ministry?

The Altar Guild prepares the Lord's Table for the Eucharist and ensures the sanctuary is organized and ready for worship services.

What do team members do?

  • Gather and prepare needed items in the sacristy; add oil to the candles, wine and water to the cruets, and wafers to the ciborium (silver container for wafers)

  • Set the altar with linens, candles and the Gospel Book

  • Put the Lectionary book on the lectern

  • Place the cruets, ciborium, chalices, and patens (plates holding wafers) on the credence table (side table)

  • Between Sunday services, replace the ceramic chalice and paten with the silver ones, covering the chalice with the veil and burse (square fabric case )

  • Wash and return communion items to sacristy

  • Clean and polish the gold, silver and brass

Suggested Skills:

  • A kind and willing spirit

  • Flexibility, dependability

Time required:

  • About one hour once a month; more during Christmas, Lent and Easter seasons

Will I work alone or as part of a team?

  • Work as a team
